Colorful Interest Class—the Language Interest Class

There are three kinds of language classes among the variety of interest classes in RFLS. Cross talk is taught by Mr. LvDongran, English play is taught by Ms. Liu Yu, and French is taught by Ms. Kiesel.
There are 37 students in the cross talk club. Mr. Lv not only teaches them cross talk, but also teaches them the skills of being a program presenter. The program presenters of the 2017 New Year Show were all from the cross talk club. Their performance received much praise from both the students and the parents.

In Mr. Lv’sopinion, there are many children’s TV programs, but none of them are suitable for children to watch, since these programs are too dull and unrealistic.

Mr. Lv thinks that it is important to see this world from the children’s perspective. He applies this theory to his cross talk teaching. He thinks like a child and writes the cross talk scripts in the same manner. Mr. Lv insists on finding ideas for cross talk in the children’s own life and writing the scripts using the children’s own language. In this way, the audience can feel the real happiness of childhood. Although the club members are from different grades and different ages, Mr. Lv effectively teaches different students with different pedagogies. One parent praised his teaching, saying, “Mr. Lv is so good! My child was ordinary and quiet, but now he is very outgoing and seems like a professional cross talk actor!”

LvDongran: Mr. Lv majored in Chinese language teaching and traditional Chinese play writing. He is very good at researching children’s language development, and was the main teacher on a CCTV children’s program. Mr. Lv is an experienced teacher who knows how to develop children’s language talents. He has been invited to present his show on CCTV online for the Spring Festival Gala.

Apart from teaching cross talk, Mr. Lv is also the planner and presenter for the schools’ big events. For example, he planned and presented the event on June 1st. Moreover, he has many famous cross talk performances, some of which have won prizes at different ceremonies.

There are 14 students in Ms. Liu Yu’s English play club. The goal of this club is for the children to speak English with confidence. In the 2017 New Year Show, the “Legend of the White Snake” was very successful. Ms Liu also took her club to take part in the Outlook English Play competition.

Ms. Liu has experienced hard times before. Children are hard to discipline in class, especially language interest class. Sometimes, they cannot stop talking once they open their mouths. Therefore, Ms. Liu made rules for them to follow and gives them special training if they talk too much. Apart from this, Ms. Liu teaches them how to pronounce words correctly in every class. Students from this club reported that they love speaking English and love English play interest class even more!

Liu Yu is an experienced English teacher who has been teaching for 5 years. She has received the RFLS Excellent Teacher award. Also, she won the prize of Outstanding Tutor in the Chinese Teenager English Speaking ACT competition.

The French language interest class has 11 students in total. According to the plans of the foreign teacher who teaches this subject, this interest class has three goals to achieve this semester. The first one is to enlarge students’ vocabulary in order to let them talk in sentences rather than by single words. Also, the more words they know, the more instructions they will understand. The second goal is to make students understand the important grammar points, such as how to use “verb+to” to make a sentence. The third goal is to make friends with this language. The students should be familiar with the look of this language, so that they can distinguish it from other languages quickly.

Since Kiesel is a foreigner that cannot speak Chinese, teaching French to Chinese students is a challenge. However, Kiesel invented different ways such as drawing and using metaphors to help students understand. Moreover, Kiesel observes students carefully. If there are any students who look upset and cannot concentrate in class, she reports them to leaders as soon as possible in order to help them.

KeiselEscudero: Keisel majored in Modern Language Study in university. She has experience teaching French in different countries including France and Morocco. Her pedagogy in teaching is immersion. She creates a scenario for students and they play different roles in this scenario. In this way, students can frequently interact with her and learn the language without any pressure.
